Disaster Recovery in Kentucky: Our Utility Family

In December 2021, an EF4 tornado hit Mayfield, Kentucky, inflicting unimagine damage and destruction on the area. In July 2022, historic floods washed over Whitesburg and Hindman, destroying physical memories and ruining structures with over five feet of water. Unfortunately, the Bluegrass state is no stranger to weather-inflicted disasters, but the people here are built with resilience and never fail to act quickly in helping one another recover.

For each of these disasters, utility companies from across the state banded together to respond immediately to keep the public safe. Amongst the devastation, crews were out addressing damages to facilities, ensuring there was minimal danger to the public and that emergency responders could do what they needed to do. Many utility companies work directly with emergency responders as part of the frontline effort, providing updates and prioritizing safety.

Even in the face of disaster, underground utility safety remains at the forefront of the minds of these utility partners. Kentucky 811 and our member utilities are also a part of the effort to ensure emergency crews amongst these situations.
